Having firm, youthful-looking breasts is often very important in how a woman feels about the overall look and shape of her body. However, as nature (and gravity) take their course, it’s often inevitable that the breasts will be affected by inelastic skin and fat deposits that cause them to take on a sagging or drooping appearance. This is also common after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss.
The good news is that breast lift surgery from our board-certified plastic surgeon can reduce excess skin in the breasts and give them a firmer and more “perky” appearance. Dr. Venkata Erella can perform breast lift surgery with results that look natural and help you feel great about the appearance of your breasts. Please call (512) 686-0012 for a complimentary consultation with Dr. Erella in the Austin area.
What Is a Breast Lift?
The natural process of aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss and other factors can contribute to a gradual loss of volume in the breasts and a stretching of the skin, ultimately leading to a sagging appearance.
Breast lift surgery can significantly improve these effects. A breast lift reduces excess skin and tightens the remainder, lifting the breasts to a more desirable position and making them look more firm and youthful. A breast lift can even be combined with breast implants to add volume to the breasts while reducing a sagging or drooping appearance.
During your initial consultation with Dr. Erella, he will explain all aspects of the breast lift procedure with you and answer your questions. Together, you and Dr. Erella will decide whether breast lift surgery is the best treatment for your needs, or if a breast lift with implants is a better option to achieve your goals.
Am I a Candidate?
Candidates for breast lift surgery are typically women who are in reasonably good physical and emotional health, and those who are:
- Seeking to reduce the appearance of sagginess in the breasts and achieve a firmer, more vibrant bustline.
- Post-weight loss patients who have experienced a loss in breast volume or sagginess in the breasts.
- Candidates for the mommy makeover procedure who have experienced a loss in breast volume or sagginess in the breasts.
This procedure can be a great restorative tool for women who have been physically altered as a result of pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, aging or other factors.
Breast Lift Procedure
There are several techniques and avenues in which to approach a breast lift procedure, otherwise known as a mastopexy. Each procedure is designed to yield different results depending on the degree of drooping and the patient’s preference for incision lines. As a general guideline, the more the shape of the breast is upgraded, the more incision lines are required to reach the desired outcome.
Some of the more commonly utilized mastopexy options include crescent, doughnut, vertical, and lollipop. Dr. Erella can explain in further detail the benefits and drawbacks of each of these techniques.
Breast lift surgery begins with an incision around the areola (the dark-pigmented area surrounding the nipple), and then down to the crease where the breast meets the torso. Dr. Erella will then remove excess skin and tighten the remaining skin of the breast. The nipples will be moved to a higher position, and the incisions will then be closed. Dr. Erella is highly skilled with this procedure and will make every effort to ensure that any residual scarring will be as light as possible.
The entire breast lift procedure typically takes less than three hours and can be completed on an outpatient basis. Though a mastopexy is not a simple operation, it is very safe when the surgeon is experienced and highly skilled, like Dr. Erella.
Breast Lift Recovery
While each patient’s results will vary, once breast lift surgery is complete and you have begun the recovery process, you can usually expect to resume normal daily routines within a week. The breasts will feel a bit sore for a few days, but any discomfort can be alleviated with medication. A compression garment will need to be worn for the first few weeks to help the breasts heal and Dr. Erella will advise you not to engage in heavy lifting or strenuous activity for about four weeks after surgery. Our plastic surgery team will provide you with specific instructions to help the recovery process go smoothly and successfully and assist you in every step of your recovery period.
It’s important to follow the recovery instructions carefully in order to ensure a fast and efficient healing process. Though often undervalued, the healing process is still one of the most important phases of surgery. This is when the choices and decisions of the patient will have the most direct influence on the final results.
Breast Lift Results
While each patient’s results will vary, after breast lift surgery, you should notice the results immediately. However, the swelling will likely take a few months to completely subside. Once the swelling is gone, the long-term results of your breast lift procedure will be apparent.
