With eyelid surgery, areas around the eyes that are often susceptible to early signs of aging, stress, and exhaustion can be significantly rejuvenated for a more youthful and vibrant appearance. The upper and lower eyelid areas are often the first to develop signs of facial aging, with the frustrating result of giving you an appearance of being older than you actually are.
Board-certified plastic surgeon Venkata Erella, MD, can perform eyelid surgery (medically known as blepharoplasty) to reduce “bags” under the eyes, eliminate excess drooping skin over the upper eyelids, and smooth out the entire area around the eyes to address a number of aesthetic issues. This procedure can work wonders for your entire facial aesthetic, and help you to feel more confident in the way you look.

What Is Eyelid Surgery?
For a variety of reasons, including the natural process of aging, and even heredity, the skin of the upper and lower eyes can become loose and inelastic. In the upper eyes, this can ultimately exhibit a wrinkled appearance, and even have an effect on your vision. In the lower eyes, loose skin can look puffy or “baggy,” typically resulting from a protrusion of excess fat in the area.
Eyelid surgery is basically a way of eliminating the excess fat and skin and giving the area a skin lift, pulling the remaining skin taut and smoothing it out so that your eyes look rested, refreshed, and youthful. Eyelid surgery is a very popular cosmetic surgery procedure and can be even more effective when combined with a brow lift to rejuvenate the entire area of the upper face.
Am I a Candidate?
For eyelid surgery procedures, good candidates include patients who are in reasonably good physical and emotional health, and those who have:
- Bagginess and dark circles under the eyes
- Loose skin in the upper eye region that may be drooping over the eyelids
- Wrinkles and excess skin in the lower lids
- Obstructed vision because of drooping skin in the upper eye area
- A tired or aged appearance around the eyes
Dr. Erella will meet with you for an initial consultation to discuss eyelid surgery and your ultimate goals for treatment. He will answer all your questions about the procedure, and determine whether eyelid surgery is the best option for your needs.
Upper Eyelid Surgery
Upper eyelid surgery addresses sagging, loose skin in the upper eyelid regions that may be giving you a tired appearance or is affecting your vision. Dr. Erella will remove the excess skin and tighten the remainder, smoothing out and rejuvenating the upper eyelid area. Scarring from this procedure should be virtually invisible, as the incisions are made in the small creases of the upper eyelids.
Upper eyelid surgery typically takes about one to two hours to complete and can be performed on an outpatient basis.
Lower Eyelid Surgery
Lower eyelid surgery is designed to eliminate bagginess under the eyes and give these areas a firmer and more refreshed appearance. Dr. Erella will remove inelastic skin and redrape fat in the area and then reshape the remaining skin to give it a smoother and more youthful look. Since only very small incisions are made under the lower eyelashes, any residual scarring should be virtually invisible.
Lower eyelid surgery can be performed as an outpatient and can take about one to two hours to complete.
Eyelid Surgery Recovery
- You will likely be able to resume normal daily activities within a few days after eyelid surgery.
- Dr. Erella will lubricate your eyes with a medicinal cream to help in the healing process after the procedure.
- There will be some residual swelling and bruising after surgery, but this should dissipate quickly and can be alleviated with cool compresses on the treated areas.
- Dr. Erella will advise you to limit activities that may strain your eyes – reading, watching television, working on the computer, etc. – for about one to two weeks after surgery.
Eyelid Surgery Results
Individual results will vary, but many patients notice immediate results after eyelid surgery; however, it may take a few weeks for the long-term results to be apparent. Ultimately, the smoother and more rested appearance of the areas around your eyes can have a positive aesthetic effect on your entire face.
