Liposuction is a popular plastic surgery procedure in which the surgeon removes fat deposits. It can be done on its own or in conjunction with another procedure, like a tummy tuck. Liposuction can be performed almost anywhere on the body, but it is most commonly done on the abdomen, hips, thighs, arms and buttocks. At Aspira Plastic Surgery & Med Spa in Austin, we are proud to offer two types of liposuction, including traditional lipo and SmartLipo™.
How Long Does It Take?
It depends. There are many variables involved, like the amount of fat removed, the location of the treated area and the type of technique used during the procedure. Combining liposuction with another procedure will, of course, extend the time.
How Much Fat Can Be Safely Removed?
Generally speaking, the surgeon cannot safely remove too many pounds of fat during a single procedure. Trying to remove too much fat at one time greatly increases the risks of complications. Furthermore, removing too much fat at one time can leave the patient with sagging and dimpled skin. If the patient wants or needs to have more than the standard amount of fat removed, they may need to schedule multiple procedures that are spaced a set amount of time apart.
Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. It is a body contouring procedure for people who are basically of normal weight, but have unwanted fat deposits in certain areas.
Which is Better, Liposuction or a Tummy Tuck?
It depends on the patient. To put it simply, liposuction removes fat. If a patient has a lot of excess, sagging skin and/or weakened abdominal muscles, they would be better off getting a tummy tuck or a mini tummy tuck, depending on the situation. On the other hand, if unwanted fat deposits are the patient’s only problem, they will likely benefit most from liposuction.
What Results Can I Expect?
Again, it depends. This procedure does remove fat cells, but it does not stop the aging process, and it does not stop the patient from gaining weight. If the patient does gain weight, most of the fat will go to untreated areas, so the patient will keep their new proportions for a while. Unfortunately, if they gain a lot of weight, the fat will eventually accumulate on the treated areas. That is why it is so important for patients to maintain a healthy lifestyle after their procedure. The results can be long-lasting with the proper lifestyle habits.
How Immediately Visible are the Results?
The exact recovery time depends on the techniques used and each patient’s results will vary. For example, a patient who undergoes SmartLipo™ will probably have less downtime, so they may see results sooner than someone who gets traditional lipo.
