Awake surgery sometimes referred to as “conscious sedation” surgery, is a way for our board-certified plastic surgeon to perform some of our plastic surgery procedures using a local anesthetic and a sedative rather than general anesthesia. Utilizing the Awake Surgery technique can give patients the ability to communicate with Dr. Venkata Erella during the procedure, and help patients avoid side effects and the recovery process associated with general anesthesia.
For more information about Awake Surgery and whether or not this technique is right for you, please call (512) 593-7699 to discuss your options during a complimentary consultation.
Awake Surgery Candidates
The ability to undergo Awake Surgery is highly dependent on the individual patient’s physiology, medical history, and the treatment that is being performed. Dr. Erella will talk with you about this technique in detail at your initial consultation, and make a determination as to whether Awake Surgery is an option for your needs.
Dr. Erella also assures patients that this technique is performed with the proper safety measures in place and only on patients who are qualified candidates. As a Fellowship-trained and board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Erella takes every precaution to ensure that patients are safe and comfortable during Awake Surgery.
Awake Surgery Procedures
Not every surgical procedure can be performed using the Awake Surgery technique. However, it can be utilized in many procedures for patients who qualify. These procedures include:
- All liposuction options – SmartLipo™ Sculpture
- Some breast procedures
- Skin cancer treatment
- Some facial rejuvenation procedures
You should not feel pain during Awake Surgery. A local anesthetic combined with light sedation is the basis of the technique, ultimately designed to allow you to feel no pain during the procedure and put you in a very relaxed, yet communicative state. Your vital signs will be monitored throughout the procedure by a qualified medical professional to ensure everything is progressing smoothly.
Dr. Erella will be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding Awake Surgery and offer you his honest and experienced opinion on whether this technique is right for you.
