What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a breast procedure that increases the size of the breasts using breast implants. This procedure is a great option for restoring breast volume after pregnancy or weight loss, for an improved natural breast appearance.

Who is a Good Candidate?

Women who feel their breasts are too small for their body frame, feel self-conscious wearing certain form-fitting clothing, or have asymmetrical breasts can often benefit from breast augmentation. Ideal candidates will be in good health, have a positive outlook on the procedure, and have realistic expectations. A consultation with Dr. Erella can help to determine if this procedure is right for you.

The Procedure

The breast augmentation procedure can be done with either silicone or saline implants. Silicone implants are created with a silicone shell filled with a silicone gel. These implants are the most natural-feeling, but if they rupture, they must be replaced right away. Saline implants are created with a silicone shell filled with a saline solution. While these implants feel firmer than natural breast tissue, if they were to rupture, the body would simply absorb the saline filling.

There are also many incision patterns to choose from when undergoing breast augmentation. These three incisions include:

Inframammary: This incision is created underneath the breast, just above the breast crease.

Transaxillary: This incision is created near the armpit, so no incisions are made on the breast.

Periareolar: This incision is created around the edge or the areola.

The breast implant and incision pattern right for you will be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Erella.

Recovery

Following breast augmentation surgery, you will need to wear a special surgical bra to reduce swelling and support your new breasts. Swelling and bruising may occur, and discomfort can be controlled with pain medication. Patients should avoid pulling or pushing heavy objects for the first week, and exercise for 2-6 weeks after surgery.

After the breasts are fully healed, patients can enjoy their new, augmented breasts and shapely silhouette for a boost in confidence!
