Aspira Plastic Surgery & Med Spa in Austin offers labiaplasty, a procedure that reshapes the inner vaginal lips for aesthetic and functional improvements. Our double-board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Venkata Erella, uses advanced surgical techniques to reduce protruding or uneven labia and create smoother contours. We provide customized care to help women restore confidence through vaginal rejuvenation.

What is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that alters the size or shape of the labia minora (inner vaginal lips). The operation is performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately 1-2 hours. Excess skin is removed, and the remaining tissue is sutured to give it a more aesthetic appearance or relieve discomfort. The final shape, size, and color may vary based on the patient’s goals.

Labiaplasty Techniques

Trim

With this technique, Dr. Erella uses a scalpel or surgical scissors to remove excess labia minora tissue and create more symmetrical inner lips. The main benefit of this approach is that it can eliminate the darker pigmented area along the border of the vaginal lips. Removing this tissue leads to lighter, more pinkish-colored edges that appear more youthful. The trim technique is suitable for patients requiring extensive changes in the inner vaginal lips.

Wedge

This method involves making a V-shaped incision in the thickest protruding part of the labia minora. After cutting away this wedge, the surgeon stitches the two remaining sides together, decreasing the length of the inner vaginal lips. The main advantage of the wedge approach is that it preserves the natural labial contours. It is ideal for patients with minor or moderate protrusion. However, this method does not remove the brownish borders (if present) of the labia minora.

Consultation & Preparation
for Labiaplasty

During the initial consultation, Dr. Erella evaluates the patient’s anatomy and aesthetic goals, explains different labiaplasty techniques, and discusses potential risks and complications. Based on the physical examination and other information, the doctor determines if the person is a good candidate for surgery. Next, the patient undergoes lab testing, such as blood work, urinalysis, and chest X-ray (in some cases).
Dr. Erella also provides instructions for the preoperative period regarding medications, diet, smoking, and alcohol use. Patients should arrange transportation home from the surgical facility and have someone to help during the initial recovery period. We also recommend preparing and freezing foods that can be easily cooked.

Labiaplasty Procedure

General Anesthesia

This vaginal rejuvenation procedure is performed under general anesthesia and can take 1–2 hours.

Dr. Erella makes small incisions along the edges of the enlarged labia minora. Standard techniques include the trim, wedge, and combination techniques. Each approach involves precise cuts to remove excess tissue and rearrange the labia’s edges.
After the incisions, unwanted or irregular skin is carefully cut away, and the remaining tissue is stitched together. The goal is to remove protrusion and make the labia edges symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing.
Once the reshaping is complete, Dr. Erella uses dissolvable sutures to close the incisions. Over several weeks after the surgery, the body slowly absorbs these stitches.

Add-On Procedures

Clitoral Hood Reduction

This surgical procedure reduces the size of the clitoral hood, which is the fold of skin surrounding the clitoris. Patients often choose to add this operation for the following reasons:
Labiaplasty of the labia majora is a cosmetic procedure that reshapes the outer vaginal lips (labia majora). During this surgery, excess fat is removed from each labium. If there is insufficient fatty tissue in the labia majora, the surgeon may transfer a small amount from other areas using liposuction.

Recovery After
Labiaplasty Surgery

Initial recovery from labia minora reduction usually takes 1-2 weeks. For the first few days, patients experience swelling and bruising in the genital area. Pain medication is prescribed to help manage any discomfort. Patients are advised to walk slowly and avoid straining to reduce tension in the incisions.
After the first week, swelling and other symptoms decrease substantially. Patients can usually return to non-strenuous work within 7-10 days. We recommend avoiding sexual intercourse for at least a month to allow proper healing without disruption. Follow-up appointments help Dr. Erella monitor the progress and address any concerns. With proper post-operative care, most patients recover fully within 6-8 weeks after labiaplasty.
