What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation surgery, sometimes referred to as a “boob job,” aims to increase breast size and enhance breast shape. It is the ideal procedure for any woman seeking to improve her self-esteem and confidence. By using breast implants or fat transfer, Dr. Erella can restore lost volume after weight loss or pregnancy, create a more enhanced shape, and improve breast symmetry. Women with smaller or unevenly sized breasts may be candidates for breast augmentation to address their individual aesthetic goals.

Types of Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation With Implants

Dr. Erella performs breast augmentations with saline or silicone implants. Each of these types has its benefits, so we help every patient decide which option is best for them. Dr. Erella considers each patient’s individual needs, goals, safety, and budget when discussing implant options.

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone breast implants may be an option for patients who are thin and desire a soft, natural look. These implants became highly popular after the FDA validated their safety and efficacy. We offer a wide range of sizes, from 100cc to over 800cc, and various profiles, including low, moderate, moderate plus, high, and ultra-high. Additionally, patients can choose between round and teardrop (anatomical) shapes. Our goal is to develop a personalized treatment plan based on each individual’s anatomy and aesthetic goals.

A recent innovation in breast augmentation is the “gummy bear” implant. Named after their thick, cohesive gel that holds its shape like a gummy bear candy, these implants provide a more natural look and feel than traditional silicone ones. The gummy bear gel is thicker and more cohesive, allowing the implant to better retain its shape. Many patients prefer these implants because they are less likely to rupture or leak compared to other types. Their realistic shape and texture make them a popular choice for women seeking a subtle but enhanced breast silhouette after augmentation. Gummy bear implants may have different characteristics and costs compared with other implant options, and your surgeon can discuss their potential benefits and risks. Nowadays, most gummy bear implants are used to augment breasts.

Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution. Any leakage from them does not pose a health threat because the body safely absorbs the solution. Saline-filled breast implants are also less costly than those made from silicone. However, saline implants can feel firmer and have more visible wrinkles and ridges, especially for women with little breast tissue. While they may not feel as natural as silicone, saline implants offer the benefits of safety and affordability. With many options to suit different needs and preferences, we work with each patient to select the best implant material for their individual situation and desired outcome.

Natural Breast Augmentation
With Fat Transfer

For patients who would like more breast volume without having an artificial implant, a fat transfer might be the best option. With this procedure, fat is harvested via liposuction from the patient’s own body, such as the abdomen, flanks, and thighs. It is then purified, refined, and injected into the breasts with small syringes, ensuring that the shape is evenly distributed. In this way, natural breast tissue becomes larger due to additional fat cells. However, not everyone qualifies for this surgery. Typically, patients gain about half to one cup in volume from this procedure. The level of augmentation depends on the amount of excess fat that can be extracted from the patient’s body.

A recent innovation in breast augmentation is the “gummy bear” implant. Named after their thick, cohesive gel that holds its shape like a gummy bear candy, these implants provide a more natural look and feel than traditional silicone ones. The gummy bear gel is thicker and more adherent, allowing the implant to retain a consistent shape instead of spreading out unevenly inside the breast. Many patients prefer these implants because they are less likely to rupture or leak compared to other types. Their realistic shape and texture make them a popular choice for women seeking a subtle but enhanced breast silhouette after augmentation. While costlier than traditional options, gummy bear implants offer certain advantages in safety, shape retention, and patient satisfaction over the long term. Consultation & Preparation
for Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a significant procedure that requires proper preparation to ensure the best results. The process begins with an initial consultation with Dr. Erella. He evaluates the patient’s health, examines their breast tissue and shape, discusses their goals, and provides recommendations on implant type, size, placement, and incision location.

Additional key aspects of preparation include:

Patients are provided instructions to follow the night before and on the day of surgery. These guidelines are related to eating, drinking, and bathing, as well as which medications to take or avoid. Proper preparation makes the procedure and recovery smoother.

Dr. Erella makes one of three types of incisions to create a pocket for the breast implant:

1. Inframammary

  • In the lower breast crease
  • Easily hidden
  • Highly accurate
  • The most commonly used incision

2. Periareolar

  • Around the areolas
  • The least amount of scarring
  • Low risk of altered nipple sensation

3. Transaxillary

  • In the armpit
  • No scarring on the breast
  • Best for saline implants
Through the incision, Dr. Erella lifts the soft breast tissue and skin to create a pocket, either directly behind the breast tissue (subglandular) or underneath the chest wall muscle (subpectoral). The pocket location depends on the breast implant shape, type, degree of enlargement desired, and patient anatomy.
The surgeon inserts and positions the breast implant in the pocket. Dr. Erella ensures that it is oriented correctly and symmetrically. If a saline implant is used, it is filled to the appropriate volume to achieve the desired breast size. Great care is taken to ensure that it lies correctly within the pocket.
After the implants are securely in place, the surgeon closes the incisions with layers of sutures, surgical tape, or skin adhesive. Bandages or a support bra may be applied to facilitate proper healing and help reduce swelling and discomfort as the incisions mend.
On the day of surgery, Dr. Erella invites the patient to discuss any last-minute questions or concerns. He marks the patient’s breasts and arranges transportation to the operating room for the procedure.

Breast Augmentation Procedure

Add-On Procedure: Breast Lift

Many women who undergo breast augmentation also choose to get a breast lift (mastopexy) done at the same time. This cosmetic surgery can improve the appearance of breasts that have begun sagging or have lost volume. During a mastopexy, excess skin is removed, and the remaining breast tissue is reshaped to make the breasts appear more youthful, perky, and better proportioned. When combined with implants, a lift can help create a more balanced breast contour. Performing both procedures together reduces recovery time and anesthesia exposure as compared to undergoing them separately. For women with breasts that have started to droop or that lack upper fullness, adding a mastopexy to a primary augmentation can lead to more satisfying aesthetic results.

Recovery After Breast Augmentation

After breast augmentation surgery, patients need to take it easy for a few days. They usually experience swelling and bruising of the breasts as well as some mild to moderate pain. Most patients are able to return to non-strenuous work within 2-4 days, though they should avoid any heavy lifting for several weeks. Complete recovery can take one month or more. The incision sites slowly heal, and the swelling gradually subsides.

Patients are advised to wear a supportive bra, and follow-up appointments are scheduled so Dr. Erella can monitor the healing process. Recovery time can vary based on the type of implant, placement, and each patient’s individual healing process. In general, women return to their regular everyday activities after about 1-2 months. It is important to follow all post-operative instructions from our surgeon to ensure optimal recovery.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Breast
Augmentation Surgery?

There are many reasons why women choose breast augmentation. While Dr. Erella wants to help each and every one of his patients, certain criteria must be met before moving forward with a consultation and examination:

The patient must want an increase in breast volume

The candidate’s motivation for seeking breast augmentation should stem from a personal desire to increase breast size and improve contour or symmetry. Patients who undergo this procedure typically wish to enhance their self-image and self-confidence through fuller breasts. However, the woman herself must want the augmentation purely for her own fulfillment rather than the preferences of a partner or to attain physical ideals. An open dialogue helps Dr. Erella ensure that surgery outcomes meet the patient’s personal goals for her body.
Women who have experienced changes in breast shape due to natural life events may be candidates for breast augmentation. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and the aging process can all contribute to the loss of volume and firmness over time. Some women notice their breasts becoming more elongated or “droopy.” Others feel that their breasts look deflated or asymmetrical after nursing. These changes can be emotionally difficult and make clothing and swimsuits fit less comfortably. Breast implants may help to restore a more youthful, rounded shape and profile.

It is very common for breasts to be slightly uneven or asymmetrical in size or shape. However, more pronounced misalignment can make finding properly fitting bras challenging. It may also cause self-consciousness about appearance in and out of clothing. Augmentation is an option for creating better symmetry and proportion. Implant sizing and placement can be tailored to match the larger breast, with a lift on the smaller side if needed. The goal is to make the difference between the patient’s breasts less noticeable, giving them a more balanced figure. Restoring symmetry may greatly increase their comfort and self-confidence.

Good candidates for breast augmentation are women who understand the possibilities and limitations of the procedure. While implants may increase fullness, improve shape, and create better symmetry, they cannot defy gravity or turn back time completely. Therefore, discussing personal goals with Dr. Erella is crucial. Together, we can explore all options to find the right balance between enhancement and a natural look for the patient’s body.

If the patient meets these general criteria, Dr. Erella will be happy to meet with them personally to discuss their aesthetic goals. It is important to note that augmentation is not meant to lift, reduce volume, or reconstruct the breast. However, Dr. Erella offers additional procedures that target these issues.
